Are you registered to vote at the 5th May 'alternative vote' referendum and local government elections yet?

If you’re over 18 and a UK resident, you can vote in the upcoming Alternative Vote referendum and local government elections on Thursday 5th May 2011.

In order to vote, you need to be registered. If you think you might not be registered (perhaps you’ve moved house or turned 18 recently) and you live at a York address, you can register easily by downloading, printing and signing this form (PDF), then posting it to the council at the address given.

If you can’t print the form yourself, go to the council office at the Guildhall, and ask for one at reception. It only takes a minute to complete, then you can hand it straight in.

Monday 11th April 2011 is the last day you can register to vote on 5th May according to the York Council website.

A 150-year-old Ordnance Survey map of York that you can zoom and scroll around.

Here’s a few things to look out for:

Old York Railway Station within the city walls, next to Tanner Row.
The imposing Gaol of The County of York complex surrounding Cliffords Tower and what is now the Castle Museum and Law Courts.
No Piccadilly connecting Fishergate to Parliament Square.
No Lendal or Skeldergate bridges; just Ouse Bridge.
An outdoor swimming pool in the south-west of Museum Gardens.
The Barbican site hosts a large cattle market.
A number of large houses with spacious back gardens occupying what is now the northern part of York Racecourse.
And of course, a vast expanse of empty space surrounding York that has now been developed.
